Avoiding a Web Hosting Nightmare

Having a good host can really make your entire Internet experience pleasurable.  Unfortunately, far too many of us have had the experience of being with a poor hosting company, one that did not live up to our expectations.

If you would like to be able to avoid many of the pitfalls that go along with hosting a website, here are a few things for you to look out for.  These will help you to be happy with the hosting company that you choose and to make sure that it stays that way.

The first thing that you need to do is to test out the hosting company ahead of time.  It is almost impossible to do this in a physical sense but that is where the review sites on the Internet come in.  People are going to tell you about their experience with the hosting company, whether it is good or bad.  Look at some of these reviews online, you will quickly be able to tell what kind of a company you are planning on dealing with.

Before you get involved with the hosting company, you should see what kind of customer service they offer.  This is relatively easy to do as most of them have their customer service number posted right on the website.  If they don’t have a way to contact them openly, move onto the next host.  If they do have a way of contacting them, test it out and see how long it takes them to get back to you.  If you are trying a telephone number and your calls repeatedly get routed to voicemail, consider that a red flag as well.

Consider the control panel that is behind the hosting.  Some of the most popular control panels include Plesk and cPanel.  If you familiarize yourself with one of these control panels, it will be easy for you to switch hosting accounts in the future.  As long as you choose a new hosting account with the same type of control panel, the move will be practically seamless.

Keep two backups of your website at any given time.  Consider the server to be a third backup and make sure that you always have a current copy of all of your web files on your computer and locked away on a backup drive.  Don’t make the mistake that many individuals make of trusting their hosting company to back up the data on a regular basis.  They may offer it, but whenever you need it, it may not be available.

Finally, you should make sure that you understand all the terms of service for the hosting company.  If you send out a legitimate e-mail when somebody complains about it, will they shut you off?  Many hosting companies will, just to avoid headaches on their end.  If you have any questions about this, talk to your hosting company in advance.  As long as they are willing to be reasonable with you, they are worth your attention.
