How Much Does Your Domain Name Matter?

One of the most disappointing things that people run into whenever they are first in trying to purchase a domain name is the fact that many of them are taken.  I’m not saying that they are all taken, that will never happen, but I am saying that most of the ones that are first searched for have been long since grabbed up.

Instead of throwing in the towel and saying that there are no more good domain names left, you simply need to get a little bit creative.  Understanding why you would own a specific domain name is an important first step for you to take in this regard.

Most people purchase domain names in order to brand their business.  If you are able to do this by purchasing one that is your business name, that’s good for you.  If you happen to be a company, such as ABC tractors, you are never going to be able to purchase ABC.com.  You will either need to use your full business name or perhaps a variation of it.

It is possible for you to use hyphens in your domain name but there is a reason why you might want to avoid this.  Imagine if you owned ABC-tractor.com.  Every time you told somebody your website, you would have to verbally say the hyphen or perhaps even explain to them the fact that they need to put it a dash between those two words.  It is a much better idea for you to purchase a domain name without the hyphens.

You would also want to choose a top level domain name such as .com, .net or .org.  Owning a .com domain name is the most preferable, simply because it is the most recognizable.  The other two extensions that we discussed are also commonly recognizable but some people may type in the .com out of habit.

Make sure that you take a good look at your domain name to see if there may be some kind of unseen, hidden meaning.  For example, the people that own expertsexchange.com probably thought that their domain name was perfect whenever they purchased it as well.

The domain name that you choose is going to identify you on the Internet.  Make sure that you give it the attention that it deserves as it will be associated with your website indefinitely.
