Should You Choose Cheap Web Hosting?
It is a common misconception that there is no such thing as good cheap web hosting. Something that you need to understand, however, is that there are plenty of cheap hosting companies that are out there which quite honestly, I wouldn’t touch with somebody else’s website.
The problem is, it can be difficult to truly cut your way through all the smoke and to be able to see which of these hosting companies are good and which ones aren’t. The best way for you to do this is to look at a few reviews of these hosting companies and see what people have to say about the following three items.
Overcrowded Servers
A shared server is just that, a server that is shared by all of the people who happen to be on it at any given time. Some hosting companies limit the number of individuals that are an the server but many of them don’t keep the numbers to a minimum.
What you end up with is a server that is very crowded, perhaps having thousands of websites. Whenever a server has this many people on it at any given time, the resources get used up rather quickly. This can make your website sluggish to load or perhaps even not load at all.
Rude Neighbors
Another problem with a shared server, especially if there are a lot of people in it at one time is you have no idea who your neighbors are. You only have access to your small portion of the server and it is hard to tell what other websites are in there.
The reason that this is a problem is because some of these websites may be running scripts that are server intensive. If your hosting company does not monitor this closely, you could soon be locked out of your website as these rogue scripts run wild.
If you are sharing an IP address with websites that are doing something underhanded, you may find that you are having a difficult time getting traffic from search engines. That is why it is important for you to have your own IP address, even if you are opting for a cheap server.
Blacklisting
If you do any kind of e-mailing using your domain name, you may have a difficult time getting your e-mails through if you are in a bad neighborhood.
People are getting more and more frustrated with unwanted e-mails and as a result, many of the companies that deliver these e-mails to you will simply filter out all e-mail from a bad neighborhood. It doesn’t matter if you have something important to say or if you have their permission to send them a message, it will get through.
Cheap Web hosting is an excellent way to get your feet wet on the Internet but it certainly is something that you should do your due diligence ahead of time and research. Don’t get stuck with a hosting company that is going to save you a dollar and cost you $1000 in frustration.
