Understanding Dedicated Web Hosting

There are times whenever you just need to have everything available for your own use and when this is the case, you are looking for dedicated hosting.  Here’s a primer on dedicated hosting that will help you to understand the basics.  I’ll also give you a couple of tips to help you avoid some common problems.

Dedicated hosting, quite simply, is just like any other type of hosting but you are not going to be sharing the server with anybody else.  You are going to have access to the whole box and all related resources will be entirely yours.

Not everybody needs a dedicated server and to tell you the truth, there are plenty of people out there who have a dedicated server who would do just fine on a virtual Private server or perhaps even shared hosting.  Sometimes, however, you just want to own everything yourself and you want to make sure that you have the absolute best.

Of course, just like with any other type of hosting, dedicated hosting comes in a number of different flavors.  Whenever you’re shopping for a dedicated server, you are going to have several different choices that are not available on any other type of hosting account.  These same things will be running the servers that you are on, but it will be split up among many different users.

CPU – This is the processor that runs the server and at times, it may actually be multiple processors.  In the world of CPUs, more is always better and the faster your CPU, the faster the server is going to run.  There are also processors that are split into several different cores which will help the server to run faster as well.  A duel core will be able to handle more data at one time than a single core processor and a quad core will be able to handle even more.  Get the best CPU that your money can afford.

Memory – The memory on the server is very similar to the memory on your computer.  The more memory you have, the smoother everything is going to run.  Memory is also something that is easily upgradable so if you get a server with inadequate memory, it will be an easy thing to upgrade.  Unfortunately, you’re going to have to pay a monthly fee on the memory that you use so make sure that you stay within your budget but just as with the CPU, get as much as you can afford.

Disc Size – This is simply telling you exactly how much data you are going to be able to store on the server.  This is not typically something that most people need to be worried about, unless they are offering a lot of files to their users.  If you plan on having your website heavy with graphics, video or multiple downloads, make sure that the disc is large enough to handle the load.

Server Management – You should make sure that you opt for a fully managed dedicated server, unless you have someone in-house who is able to handle the technical details.  If your server should happen to go down or need some maintenance, it’s a good idea to have somebody available who has physical contact with the server.

The other things that are available on a dedicated server are similar to what is available on any other type of server.  These also need to be checked out but may not be as important.  These include things such as bandwidth, and data transfer.

Make sure that you shop around and find all of the options that are available to you.  A dedicated server is something that you don’t want to move on a regular basis.  Choose wisely the first time and you will be happy for the duration.
