Unraveling the Mystery of Top-Level Domains

Every domain name that is available on the Internet is going to have a code at the end of it.  The most common of these is .com but there are also a quite a few others that are available.

Some of these codes will distinguish what type of website owns the domain name, such as .org being for organizations, .gov being for government websites or .edu for educational websites.

Some of the other codes will let you know what country the website is from. A website with the extension .co.uk is going to be from the United Kingdom and .jp is going to be a Japanese website, to give you some examples.

Understanding this to a certain extent can help you in some instances but for the most part, people are interested in owning a .com website.  This is the most easily recognizable domain name extension worldwide, and it is the most desirable.

For those of you with an interest in what some of the other country codes happen to be, here is a list of the currently available codes in alphabetical order.
