Virtual Vs Dedicated Hosting Services

In the world of hosting, there are two basic types that you need to be concerned about, dedicated and virtual.  Each of these is going to have its good points and bad points so it may take a little bit of research on your part to figure out which one you want to stick with.

Virtual hosting is sharing a server to some extent or another.  In some cases, you may be sharing the server with thousands of different people or it may be, as in the case of a virtual Private server, that you were only sharing it with about a half a dozen.  All of your data is going to reside on the same physical server as the data of the other people with whom you are sharing it.

A dedicated server, all the other hand, is where you own absolutely every portion of the server and you do not share the box with anybody else.  Not only do you own the entire physical resources of the box, you also own the data resources, such as the bandwidth and data transfer.

There are several things for you to consider whenever you are deciding between a virtual server or a dedicated one.  Here are some of the most important factors.

First of all, if you’re on virtual hosting, you run the risk of sharing the server was somebody that you would rather not share it with.  This could include websites which may be rather unsavory or perhaps dangerous websites which, unbeknownst to the hosting company, could contain viruses.  These viruses and other problems can bleed from one website to another and cause you problems, even if you are totally in the clear.

Price is also something that you need to consider and although it would be nice to own your own dedicated box, you may end up spending several hundred dollars per month to do so.  Being on a virtual server can cost you anywhere from a few dollars a month up to $100 a month, in the case of a high end virtual private server.

Server management is one final thing to look at whenever it comes to the case between dedicated versus virtual.  Although there are safeguards in place which will alert the support staff to a problem with your dedicated server, there may also be things that go wrong with it which they will not recognize until you let them know.  If you’re on a virtual server, one of the other users may recognize the problem and contact them before you.
